Distributor Off the Fence has funded a new ten part series called Top Tens of Warfare to be made in collaboration by two separate businesses within ITN.
The programmes will be the first time that ITN Productions, ITN’s in-house production unit, and ITN Source, the footage licensing division of ITN, have worked together on a project to produce a programme series.
The 10x60min series, to be sold globally, will bring the stories of war as seen through archive footage straight from the battlefield. It aims to identify and rank the most influential, and most iconic features of war, examining how technological advances have changed warfare from the First World War to modern-day conflicts.
Each programme covers a theme, such as ‘Battles’, ‘Leaders’, ‘Inventions’ or ‘Aircraft’. The series will look at modern warfare including battles such as the Somme and Stalingrad. Major war leaders will also be examined such as Mao, Churchill and Roosevelt. World-leading experts will contribute to each episode to provide vital commentary, context and analysis.

The programme is the result of an ITN initiative to create cross-collaboration between the production and archive businesses. The model enables distributors to test the market while distributor, production company and archive business share in the profits once the cost of making the series is covered.
Top Tens Of Warfare is supported by the ITN Source archive, a world leading resource of over 1 million hours of footage. It incorporates 20 major picture archives, ranging from the contemporary such as ITN, ITV, Reuters and Fox News to the historic such as British Paramount and Fox Movietone. It also includes stills images from Rex Features which are incorporated into the programme.
